You have the possibility of choosing non-contributory cover while you live abroad. In the period with non-contributory cover you maintain your previous rights to pension benefits and the group insurance. We deduct the costs related to maintaining your covers from your pension deposit.

When you become liable to taxation in Denmark again, you can reestablish your pension by paying the missing contribution as a lump sum. This contribution is tax-deductible.

If the payment is made through your employer, you will benefit from a tax relief immediately. Other rules apply if you make the payment yourself.

Non-deductible contribution payments
When you are not subject to income taxation in Denmark, you cannot deduct your contribution payments. If you want to continue paying contributions and this way maintain your insurances and savings, you can choose a § 53A scheme. This means that you can have the part of your savings which your have paid during your stay abroad paid tax-free. However, you must make contribution payments from a Danish bank.

Normally the pension fund pays pension return tax on your behalf. This tax accounts for 15.3 percent. When you are not liable to taxation in Denmark, your can apply to SKAT for an exemption from paying pension return tax.

When you pay tax in Denmark there is a limit to how much you can pay to your pension scheme. When you are not paying tax in Denmark, there is no limit.
